RE

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

There are two clear aims throughout Key Stage three and four. 

  1. To develop the potential and worth of each student in achieving their true academic ability in RE. 
  1. To develop the faith of each child. As a joint Catholic and Church of England Academy we seek to provide opportunities within RE for each child to explore faith issues and in turn continue to grow in spirituality as an individual. 

RE provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.  In lessons students will be given the opportunity to evaluate arguments for and against belief in God.  All learners are expected to express their own responses to the issues and questions raised in each topic using reasons and evidence and evaluate alternate viewpoints about these issues and questions. 

RE encourages students to develop their sense of identity and belonging.  It enables them to flourish individually within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society and global community.  RE has an important role in preparing students for adult life, employment and lifelong learning.  It enables students to develop respect for and sensitivity to others, in particular those whose faiths and beliefs are different from their own.  It promotes discernment and enables students to combat prejudice.

KS4 information– 

At the Academy of St. Nicholas we follow the AQA specification A syllabus in Religious Education. Our students will complete the full GCSE course and will be examined on the Religion paper, studying Christianity with the second religion being Judaism.  Pupils will then complete the philosophy and ethics paper studying 4 of the 8 available themes. 

For the religion paper worth 50% student will study;

Judaism: Beliefs and Teachings 

Judaism: Practices 

For the Philosophy and Ethics paper worth 50% 

Theme A: Marriage and the Family 

Theme B: Religion and Life

KS5 Information-  

All students attending All Saints Sixth Form College study Core RE which is a program designed to allow students to explore the wider world and issues affecting it.  Within Core RE students learn valuable skills that they can use later in life such as researching, evaluating, debate and speaking skills. 

A Level 

At All Saints Sixth Form College we follow OCR Religious Studies.  This is a full A Level course and students will explore the following components: 

Philosophy (worth 33%) – The study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. 

Ethics (worth 33%) – The study of moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity 

Development in Christian Thought (worth 33%) – The study of how religion has developed throughout history.  Evaluating the relationship between religion and society. 

This course comprises of 3 exams for each component listed above.
