SUBJECT OVERVIEW

The aim of the Modern Foreign Languages department is to create compelling learning experiences in which all students enjoy, make progress and achieve through language learning.  Learning languages contributes tointer-cultural understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfillment.  The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.

The curriculum is based around real life situations both in a leisure and business context.  Students will have access to many different resources including interactive ICT resources, DVDs and CDs.

Current spec for year 11

“In Listening and Reading there are two tiers of assessment: Higher (A*-D). Students may be entered for either Foundation these two skills, eg Foundation Listening and Higher Reading

Unit 1: Listening*

20% of the marks

Foundation Tier – 30min (+5 min reading time)

Higher Tier – 40 min (+ min reading time)

A range of question types based on pre-recored spoken material in French.

Unit 2: Reading*

20% of the marks

Foundation Tier – 30min

Higher Tier – 50 min

A range of question types based on written material in French.

Unit 3: Speaking

Controlled Assessment (internally assessed)  30% of the marks

Students submit for moderation two tasks.

Unit 4: Writing

Controlled Assessment (externally assessed)  30% of the marks

Students submit for marking two tasks.

KEY STAGE 5

  • AQA GCE A Level Spanish and/or French: Students will learn how to gain insight into their own society by making comparisons between different countries, cultures, communities and people.  This course is excellent preparation for those who wish to study languages at university or as a starting point for a career in languages.

There is an opportunity for students to take part in a Year 12 Exchange Visit with our partner school, Colegio Santa Ana y San Rafael, in Madrid.
