SUBJECT OVERVIEW

This qualification provides the opportunity to gain a vocational qualification that gives a basic introduction to the sector. It has been designed to meet the needs of learners from the age of 14 years. It includes the knowledge and understanding of child development and well-being necessary for working with children in a variety of settings. It is aimed at a range of learners who wish to be introduced to childcare and development of children aged 0-5 years.

The Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education prepares learners for the Technical Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator). It provides learners with knowledge with children from birth to 7 years and practical experience working with children from birth to 5 years

What does the qualification cover?

The Tech Award gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The main focus is on three areas, which cover:

  • skills and processes, such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health, and designing a plan to improve their health and wellbeing
  • attitudes, namely the care values that are vitally important in the sector, and the opportunity to practise applying them
  • knowledge that underpins the effective use of skills, processes and attitudes, including human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing.

SCHEMES OF WORK

KEY STAGE 4

NCFE CACHE Level 2 Award in Child Development and Care

You will study 3 units, 2 are coursework and one is a multiple choice exam.

  • Unit 1: An introduction to working with children aged 0-5 years-  Covered in Year 9
  • Unit 2: Development and well-being 0-5 year  Complete in Year 10
  • Unit 3: Childcare and development 0-5 year Complete in year 11

Health & Social Care

BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care

  • Component 1: Human Lifespan Development  Completed in Year 9
  • Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values Completed in year 10
  • Component 3: Health and Wellbeing Completed in year 11

Units 1 &2, are assessed through coursework and unit 3 is an controlled assessment marked by Edexcel.

 

KEY STAGE 5

NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education

This course is the equivalent to one A Level and carries UCAS points. You will study 7 units and complete and externally assessed assignment.

  • Unit 1: Child development from conception to seven years- Completed in year 12
  • Unit 2: Children’s health and well-being- Completed in Year 12
  • Unit 3: Providing safe environments for children Year 13
  • Unit 4: Child health- Completed in Year 12
  • Unit 5: Play and learning Year 13
  • Unit 6: Understanding children’s additional needs Year 13
  • Unit 7: Observation, assessment and planning- Completed in Year 12

Cambridge TECHNICALS LEVEL 3 Extended certificate HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

This qualification is the equivalent to 1 A level and carries UCAS points

Units 1, 2 & 3 are covered in Year 12. Unit 4 and 2 other optional units are covered in year 13. We will pick units based on the interests of students.

Study 4 compulsory units including:

  • Building positive relationships in health and social care
  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
  • Health, safety and security in health and social care
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care
