Design Technology

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Design Technology is a subject that interests and excites young people.  It requires them to work both practically and theoretically, to investigate and research, design, plan, make and evaluate.  Design Technology covers work within electronics, food, materials such as wood, metal, plastics and textiles, and requires the development of graphical skills, practical skills and theoretical knowledge and understanding.

Students will have access to a wide range of resources including fully equipped workshops and kitchens as well accessing the latest ICT facilities and software.  Students will be given the skills to operate CAD (Computer Aided Design) software and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) equipment such as industrial vinyl and laser cutters.

SCHEMES OF WORK

KEY STAGE 3

In Years 7, 8 & 9 students rotate through units of Design and Technology in: Resistant Materials, Graphics and Food Studies.  Students will tackle projects such as advertisement, night lights, wooden tables and healthy foods.  Students will build a range of skills in all these areas and learn how the design process works.

KEY STAGE 4

  • AQA GCSE Resistant Materials – This course gives students the chance to work with a range of materials including woods, metals and plastics.  During the course students will complete a range of practical tasks including learning the theory behind a range of materials.
  • Design Engineer Construct Engineering – This course gives students the chance to explore how engineering affects the world we live in.  Students will learn how to analyse products, look at engineering materials and how CAD/CAM is used in the Engineering world.

KEY STAGE 5

Edexcel A-Level Product Design Graphics – This course allows students to develop skills in product development and design new products for the future along with designing and making promotional materials.  The course allows students to gain in depth knowledge in materials and equipment and is the perfect route for University courses in both Product and Graphic Design.
